You’ve probably seen the phrase “plant-based” on a range of products from food to skincare and cleaning products. But what does it mean for Vera Clean?
While “plant-based” is often associated with food and organic living, in the world of cleaning it usually means the formula’s main ingredients are primarily derived from plants instead of synthetic or petroleum derived chemicals. “Plant-based” can be a vague term that can mean different things for different products, so we want to clarify what it means for Vera.
How is Vera plant-based?
Vera is a plant-based cleaner in that it’s main ingredients are derived from natural sources. The ingredients in Vera have been designed to be gentle and for frequent use and is particularly suited for healthcare settings and high-traffic areas which need to be maintained regularly. It contains:
- Purified Soft Water – Helps dissolve and carry the other ingredients; softened for better cleaning performance.
- Plant-Based Cleansers – Derived from coconut or palm oil; creates rich foam and removes grease.
- Coconut-Derived Surfactant – Mild cleanser that boosts foaming and gently breaks down dirt.
- Natural Degreaser – A pH adjuster that helps dissolve tough oils and grime (used in very low, safe amounts).
- Biodegradable Chelating Agent – Improves cleaning by softening hard water minerals; enhances effectiveness.
- Eco-Friendly Disinfectant – Quaternary compound that kills bacteria and viruses efficiently.
Alongside these ingredients, the formula also incorporates important synthetic and mineral compounds for stability and effectiveness. Because Vera does not contain alcohol, a combination of broad-spectrum antimicrobial compounds are used to kill germs effectively and prevent its regrowth. The synthetic compounds in Vera also help to:
- improve formula’s effectiveness
- boost degreasing
- improve antimicrobial action
- help the formula to work better in hard water
- improves shelf life and degradation of formula
It is through a lot of research and development that Vera’s formula has been developed to balance a combination of primarily plant-based and synthetic compounds that is able to break down dirt, grease, and stains with minimal impact on people and the environment.
Vera Is Inspired by Nature
Vera is plant-based in that it uses plant-based primary ingredients to clean. It is inspired by Mariana’s grandmother’s experience using plant-based remedies in the Second World War. But Vera is also a multi-purpose cleaner that works as well as it does because of the combination of plant-derived and carefully formulated synthetic and mineral compounds which have been tested and developed in Australian laboratories over many years to make it as safe and gentle as possible while still being effective.
A product that is “plant based” doesn’t necessarily mean it is better or worse than other cleaners in terms of cleaning or being environmentally friendly. Although the word may influence what we think of as safe and natural, all cleaners are chemicals which can be hazardous in their own way and have pros and cons depending on your own cleaning needs.
The Vera formula uses a science-backed blend of ingredients to deliver a deep clean that is suited for everyday cleaning or tougher jobs. The result is a formula lifts grime, cuts grease, and eliminates 99.9% of bacteria—while being safe on most household surfaces and being gentle on your skin, animals, and the environment.
